Consumers are cutting back on spending amid the recession, and focusing on finding bargains. The company, which operates of namesake stores as well as abercrombie, its children's apparel brand; surf-themed Hollister; and intimate apparel store Gilly Hicks, said Friday it is lowering prices and trying to catch up with fashion trends. It reported a fiscal second-quarter loss for the period ending Aug. 1 and its third-straight quarter of double-digit sales declines.
Lakner said the company has its work cut out domestically, since it must close underperforming stores and improve productivity in ones that stay hollister clothing open. She said it must do this while it expands overseas. The company is closing the Ruehl line, its store focused on handbags and other accessories, and cutting jobs.
UBS analyst Roxanne Meyer said the U.S. store base is "mature" and likely to see "meaningful" store closures/reloations. The Ruehl No.925 and its children's' apparel brand are likely to see store closings, she wrote, which "could help make the brands feel less mass/more unique."
She told clients in a note Monday the key driver is to have better sales at full price, but that is not yet being seen in the sales.
Meyer cut her fiscal 2009 earnings per share estimate to 74 cents from 85 cents, while Lakner cut hers from 79 cents to 73 cents. Meyer maintained her fiscal 2010 earnings per share estimate at $1.51, while Lakner cut hers by 2 cents to $1.40.
Analysts predict the company will earn 84 cents per share in fiscal 2009 and $1.51 in fiscal 2010.
In midday trading, the Dow fell 159.46, or 1.7 percent, to 9,160.88. Meanwhile, the Standard & Poor's 500 index and the Nasdaq composite index each dropped more than 2 percent.

Victory for Abercrombie & Fitch shop worker
An abercrombie shop worker with a prosthetic arm has won her case for wrongful dismissal against the retailer.

A central London tribunal has ruled she was wrongfully hollister clothing dismissed and unlawfully harassed, but did not uphold her claim for disability discrimination.
According to reports, the tribunal awarded Dean £7,800 compensation for injury to her feelings and £1,077.37 for loss of earnings and £136.75 damages for her wrongful dismissal.
Dean is believed to have befriended disabled abercrombie outlet model Sophie Morgan and the pair have launched Imperfect, a clothing range and campaign group.

Abercrombie & Fitch is an AMAZING store
Abercrombie & Fitch has reported weak same-store sales over abercrombie and fitch the past year as it has stuck to relatively high
price points amid the recession. Black said it should see its same-store sales improve, although he still
predicts a 23 percent drop, as shoppers pick up back-to-school items.
Results should be helped by improved results at the hollister chain's surf-themed Hollister offshoot, Black said.
Longer term, Black said he expects Abercrombie should begin to get more revenue from international flagship
stores beginning in the fourth quarter. Also, lower cost-of-goods in 2010 should help the company lower opening
price points, Black said. He upgraded the stock to "overweight" abercrombie outlet from "equal weight."
He also upgraded Gap to "overweight" from "equal weight," based on merchandise improvement and likely
improvement at its Old Navy stores by the December holiday season.

Friday The 13th (2009)
The exhumation of old-school horror classics abercrombie and fitch continues, courtesy of chief grave robber Marcus Nispel, who already gave Tobe Hooper's Texas Chain Saw Massacre a glossy lick of paint, and now turns his attention to Sean S. Cunningham's Friday The 13th. Sadly, while Chain Saw '03 was a competent retread that didn't dishonour the grittier original, Friday '09 is a disappointing husk that fails to engender any abercrombie and fitch reaction beyond escalating tedium.
Cards on the table, I've never been a huge fan of this sub-genre -- mainly because seeing raucous, horny teens get eviscerated by abercrombie and fitch a masked man-child is a primal, raw, shocking notion that you quickly become desensitized to on-screen. Friday The 13th alone has 9 sequels, so it's difficult to watch any of these movies without noticing the formula that underpins them, the reheated ideas that inform them, and the clichés they clutch to like limpets. Whatever brief moments of psychological terror they stir up is often flushed away for the sake of a grizzly set-piece. Truth is, it's the abercrombie and fitch UK where this genre has found evolution in the '00s, through the likes of Neil Marshall's The Descent and Eden Lake; two movies that, while clearly abercrombie and fitch inspired by their American forbearers, found new avenues to explore and provided social commentary in a fresher way.

Abercrombie & Fitch, Pentair, Array
abercrombie and fitch is likely to continue to see a weakening in its sales at stores open at least a year, Citi Investment Research analyst Kimberly Greenberger said on Sept. 4 as she downgraded the apparel retailer.
"We believe that abercrombie and fitch will continue to experience deteriorating same-store sales due to problems beyond pricing and newness as abercrombie and fitch proactive promotional stance during back-to-school shopping season is not supporting improved sales productivity," Greenberger wrote in a client note.
The analyst anticipates that the sales misses will probably lead the New Albany, Ohio-based company to continue to lower its earnings abercrombie and fitch per share forecasts. Greenberger also cut her share price target to $24 from $33.
Pentair (PNR)
KeyBanc maintains hold
Cost control and opportunities for growth will help Pentair weather the recession and boost revenue and earnings when markets improve, KeyBanc analyst Jeffrey D. Hammond said Sept. 4 as he raised his 2009 and 2010 profit estimates for the manufacturer of water treatment and storage systems.
Following a recent analysts' day presentation, Hammond said demand in the Minneapolis-based company's technical products business will likely remain challenged next year. But management's progress on cost containment will drive up earnings, he said. He increased his 2009 estimate to $1.43 per share from $1.40 per abercrombie and fitch share and raised his 2010 estimate to $1.80 per share from $1.70 per share.
Near-term demand has not risen, but Pentair's vertical market focus and new product launches "could support a more robust growth profile in the next cycle," Hammond said in a note to investors.
Array Biopharma (ARRY)
Leerink Swann downgrades o market perform from outperform
Leerink Swann analyst Howard Liang said on Sept. 4 he views data from Phase II trial of the company's ARRY-162 for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as poor. With data from the trial out of the way and without its potential to generate a large upside, Liang does not see another compound in Array's remaining pipeline to generate excitement in the near term.
Liang notes Array does have a broad product pipeline but in the new funding environment, its breadth may be difficult to sustain. He said Array's valuation is not compelling to him. The analyst cut his $6 price target to $2 by removing revenues from ARRY-162 from his model.

High Executive Pay Not Out of Style at Abercrombie & Fitch
It pays well to work at abercrombie and fitch (ANF), especially if you’re CEO Mike Jefferies. According to a report recently cited by The Deal, Jefferies received $71.8 million in total compensation in 2008—making him the 10th highest paid CEO in the U.S. My initial reaction to the report was to check the company’s recently filed DEF 14A to determine whether this large sum was correct.
A cursory review of the document would be very misleading. On page 40, under “Fiscal 2008 Summary Compensation Table,” the data table abercrombie and fitch provided states that Jefferies was paid a total of $26.2 million, $11.5 million, and $15.9 million in FY 2006-08. The 2008 breakdown follows:1 Includes a $6 million “stay bonus” for remaining employed by the Company in the capacity of Chairman and CEO through December 31, 2008.
2 Includes $1.1 million in aggregate incremental abercrombie and fitch cost for personal use of Company-owned aircraft.
After glancing at the table, one would assume that Jefferies was “only” paid about $16 million in 2008. By digging a little further into the filing, one would learn that Jefferies had recently signed a new employment agreement with the company on December 19, 2008. Under this agreement, Jefferies was awarded 4 million stock appreciation rights (SARs), 40% of which (1.6 million) were awarded on the signing date with exercise prices ranging from $22.84 to $41.11. Assuming the options are exercised at their respective abercrombie and fitch prices, they would be worth about $45.68 million.
Is Mike Jefferies worth $71.8 million? That’s a very difficult question to answer and I will leave it up to the reader to decide. I would like to point out that Jefferies has an outstanding track record of creating shareholder value at abercrombie and fitch. Jefferies has been with the company since it was bought out of bankruptcy by The Limited in 1988. Over that time period, he has created one of the most enviable brands in the specialty retail space and the company has averaged after-tax returns on invested capital in excess of 30%.

Abercrombie shares fall amid broader market slump
Shares of preppy retailer abercrombie and fitch. tumbled Monday amid a widespread market slump as investors continued to worry about consumer spending.
The New Albany, Ohio-based retailer saw its shares drop $2.04, or 6 percent, to $32.21 in midday trading.
Caris & Co. analyst Dorothy Lakner abercrombie and fitch said the retailer's second-quarter results reported Friday were in line with estimates and the company's fashion is improving. That can help justify higher prices, although there are some concessions on pricing by the abercrombie and fitch company, she wrote.
"But this has not yet translated into improving comps (sales), so we don't think the champagne should come out just yet," she wrote to clients in a note Monday.
Consumers are cutting back on spending amid the recession, and focusing on finding bargains. Abercromie & Fitch results fall in August
abercrombie and fitch Co. said Thursday that its sales careened 29 percent in August, worse than expected as
shoppers continued to scale back shopping amid the recession.
The 29 percent decline in sales at stores open at least a year was bigger than a decline of 23.9 percent
expected by analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters.
The measurement is an important retail performance indicator because it measures growth at existing locations
rather than newly opened ones.
For the four weeks that ended Aug. 29, abercrombie and fitch the teen retailer said results in all its divisions were worse than
expected.
Sales at stores open at least a year at its eponymous abercrombie and fitch chain sank 26 percent, a deeper
decline than analyst's expected 22.1 percent drop. The figure slid 26 percent at children's chain
abercrombie and fitch, 32 percent at Hollister company, and 37 percent at Ruehl, a brand the company plans to shut by
the end of the year. Analysts had expected sales at that store to fall 29.6 percent.
For the four week period, the New Albany, Ohio-based chain said its net sales declined 23 percent to $313.9
million, down from $405.5 million last year.
abercrombie and fitch shares sank $1.29, or 4 percent, to $30.80 in premarket trading Thursday after closing Wednesday
at $32.09.

I will buy Abercrombie because it's on sale!
abercrombie and fitch was started in 1892 by David T.abercrombie and fitch
as an outfitter for those who were heading into the wilderness. The
brand began to falter in the mid 19th century, but began a turnaround
when they were bought by The Limited in 1988.There are a lot of people
out there who make this their brand, buying very little from other
clothing companies.
It’s this kind of loyalty from customers that has
allowed the brand to expand so rapidly after abercrombie and fitch changing its image in the
late 80s.A lot has to do with the name of this brand, but it’s also about the
clothes.Dean is currently a student at Queen Mary University, located
in London, and is pursuing a barrister’s degree.
Riam, who was born without a forearm, abercrombie and fitch has utilized a prosthetic appendage for as long as
she can remember.REUHL is just another example long line of concepts
rolled out by established chains over the last few years that were
either closed or abandoned.
This history adds a little something extra to the
clothes in this brand. Quality is something that never goes out of
style and it shows in these clothes and accessories.A better question
might be where you can’t find this clothing brand. Both online and in
the physical world, there are a lot abercrombie and fitch of different places to pick up
clothes or accessories that carry this name and the heritage that comes
along with it.
This company knows what the customers want and
they deliver. While there are a lot of reasons to consider this brand,
here are some of the top ones you should think about before you spend
your hard earned money on clothes from other companies.

allowed the brand to expand so rapidly after abercrombie and fitch changing its image in the
late 80s.A lot has to do with the name of this brand, but it’s also about the
clothes.Dean is currently a student at Queen Mary University, located

Riam, who was born without a forearm, abercrombie and fitch has utilized a prosthetic appendage for as long as
she can remember.REUHL is just another example long line of concepts
rolled out by established chains over the last few years that were
either closed or abandoned.
This history adds a little something extra to the

Abercrombie & Fitch Must Pay for Harassing Former Employee
abercrombie and fitch is going to need to push some extra moose-emblazoned button-downs and hoodies today.
Britain's Central London Employment Tribunal awarded former employee abercrombie and fitch Riam Dean £9,014 (approximately $14,696) after ruling that the clothing giant had harassed her about her prosthetic arm, reports the Daily Mail.
Dean, who worked at the abercrombie and fitch London flagship store, sued the company for discrimination against her disability, claiming bosses banished her to the stockroom rather than use her on the sales floor, and even suggested that she stay out of sight until the colder months, when employee uniforms allowed for more arm coverage.
Though the tribunal did acknowledge that abercrombie and fitch created an "adversely humiliating environment" for Dean -- who quit after just five shifts -- they did not find evidence of direct discrimination, due to the fact that all store employees must adhere to the in-house looks policy dictating appearance.
Hey, £9,014 could buy a ton abercrombie and fitch of rugby shirts, but something tells us Dean will take her money elsewhere.

Law Student, Prosthetic Arm, Abercrombie & Fitch
We figured those three phrases alone would be enough to get you to to sit up and take notice. A law student with a prosthetic arm has won her suit for wrongful dismissal against U.S. clothing retailer abercrombie and fitch after she was ordered to work in the stockroom. Click here for the AP story.
The woman, Riam Dean (pictured), had alleged that she was removed from a London branch’s sales floor because the cardigan she wore to cover her missing left forearm violated abercrombie and fitch strict dress code. The 22-year-old testified that her manager taunted her about her disability. Ohio-based Abercrombie denied this.
A London employment trial ordered abercrombie and fitch to pay Dean about $15,000 in compensation for injured feelings, lost earnings and wrongful dismissal.
According to Dean, she was asked by a company employee if it would be possible “to keep you in the stockroom until the winter uniform arrives.” Dean then received letter saying she had been “erroneously placed on the shop floor.”

Abercrombie Doesn't Change
In this retail environment, where consumers selectively scour for bargains, it is tempting for retailers to reduce prices in order to drive sales and reduce inventory. One company bucking this trend is cheap abercrombie and fitch (ANF), whose stated number one priority through this downturn is to "protect the brands". By holding prices steady while competitors discount, management hopes cheap Ambercrombie emerges from the recession as a superior brand that consumers are willing to pay a premium for.
Is this a good strategy? Only time will tell. In a sense, however, it is a riskier strategy, as short-term earnings are sacrificed in exchange for a future benefit of uncertain magnitude. Same-store sales are down a staggering 30% year over year, as consumer preferences have shifted towards cheaper brands. Despite the large sales drop, inventories are running some 15% above what they were at this time last year, which is undoubtedly contributing to the fact that the company has had to increase its debt load from $43 million one year ago to its current level of $157 million.
But the company appears poised to be able to weather the economic storm. cheap abercrombie and fitch is still profitable despite the huge drop in sales thanks to its massive gross margins: buying apparel items manufactured in Asia and South America and selling them in North America for many times their cost has proven very fruitful for many companies which appeal to the fashion-conscious, and that's not likely to change.
There are risks to be aware of, however. If the recession deepens, abercrombie and fitch wholesale cost structure could prove inflexible. While we have seen that evenhealthy retailers have been able to renegotiate their leases lower, the sheer magnitude of ANF's future lease obligations ($2.8 billion, larger than the company's market cap!) cannot be ignored. Nevertheless, the company does have room to reduce prices and increase short-term profits should this happen.

Insult and injury at Abercrombie & Fitch: poor earnings, and a lost lawsuit
Today brought a double dose of bad news for abercrombie and fitch. (ANF). On top of disappointing earnings for the second quarter, the Associated Press reports that a London court has ordered the clothing chain to pay a disabled employee about $15,000 for injured feelings and wrongful dismissal.
The court turned down a discrimination claim that abercrombie and fitch had disputed.
Riam Dean, a 22-year-old university student, had complained that her bosses would not let her wear a sweater to cover her prosthetic arm and tried to shift her off the shop floor. Dean's suit claimed that she was told she didn't fit in with the "look policy" at the chain's store on Savile Row in central Londo abercrombie and fitch has run into trouble in the past for putting style first when hiring. Five years ago, it settled several employment discrimination suits in the U.S.
And the hits kept coming. This morning, abercrombie and fitch posted disappointing second-quarter earnings -- a net loss of $19.8 million, due to $24.4 million in charges from closing down the Ruehl chain.
The company's same-store sales down 30 percent, to $648.5 million, over the second quarter of 2008. Sales at the abercrombie and fitch stores were down 27 percent, and same-store sales at Hollister were down 31 percent. Back-to-school is turning into a glum time.

Abercrombie Pulls T-Shirts After Teen Girls Launch Boycott
Tees emblazoned with phrases deemed offensive to women have been yanked from abercrombie and fitch clothing stores thanks to a group of teen girls who launched a nationwide “girlcott.”
Bowing to pressure from the public and supporters of the Allegheny County Girls as Grantmakers (the group of nearly two dozen girls who spearheaded the protest), the retailer announced Friday that it is pulling two shirts off the market: one with the slogan “Gentlemen Prefer Tig Old Bitties” and a second reading, “With These, Who Needs Brains?” across the chest.
“We recognize that the shirts in question, while meant to be humorous, might abercrombie and fitch be troubling to some,” the company said in a statement.
Several more questionable tees — with expressions like “Blondes Are Adored, Brunettes Are Ignored,” “I Had A Nightmare I Was A Brunette,” “Do I Make You Look Fat” and “No Money, No Car, No Chance” — are still available but could be pulled, pending negotiations with the girls later this month. The group has offered to help A&F come up with more empowering messages to put on its clothing in the future.
The idea for the boycott came during a meeting the girls had at a retreat this summer. As they were brainstorming ideas of what they could do to make a difference in their community, discussion soon shifted to the abercrombie and fitch tees, which many of them saw as “nasty and disgusting,” said 13-year-old Jettie Fields, the group’s co-chair.
“There’s a certain degree to where those shirts can be funny, but with the one that said, ‘With These, Who Needs Brains?,’ I think that’s really pushing it and takes it too far,” Fields said. “Girls need to know it’s not necessary to wear these shirts, and that if they stop buying them, then abercrombie and fitch will stop selling them.”
The group held a press conference and then was blown away by the amount of support and media coverage the boycott received, Fields said. “We had no idea it would get this far, so we’re all just really happy,” she said. “I was like, ‘Wow, people are actually taking us seriously. They don’t just see as a group of little girls.’ The fact that we were able to take down a huge corporation and have them listen to us, that’s an awesome victory.”
“We are delighted they won,” said Sarah Gould, president of the Ms. Foundation for Women. “These T-shirts … are potentially dangerous to girls and their health because it reinforces the message that girls are only as good as what their bodies are, and that’s very undermining to a girl’s healthy development. This girlcott just proves that today’s teen girl is much smarter, more aware and very socially active. She won’t blindly follow a trend or wear clothes from a brand just because it is deemed ‘cool.’ ”
This isn’t the first time Abercrombie has come under fire for the phrases on its clothing. In 2003 the chain was criticized for a series of tees that featured caricatures of Asians along with phrases like “Two Wongs Can Make It White” (in a mock dry-cleaning business ad) and “Get Your Buddha On The Floor.”
Riam Dean has a prosthetic arm that attaches at the elbow, and she typically wears a sweater to cover the prosthetic. While A&F employees are required to wear jeans and a polo shirt, she was given permission to wear a white cardigan while working on the floor. But only a few days after she started work, the store was paid a visit by the “visual team.” This group’s purpose is to sure the shop and its staff look up to code. One of the members of the team demanded she take off the cardigan, but she insisted she had permission to wear it. Nevertheless, she was asked by management to continue her employment in the stockroom, far out of the public eye. Management claimed that she “violated the ‘Look Policy,” which is an imperative part of working for such a prestigious clothing outlet. As if she could help the fact that she is, unfortunately, missing an arm. Totally her fault, I suppose. The nerve. Pssh.
Riam sucked it up and commenced her stockroom duties, normally reserved for the “underlings” (i.e., ethnic minorities) of abercrombie and fitch
“society” and received a telephone call at home a few days later, asking if she would continue on board with the company’s stockroom until their winter uniforms came in, which consisted of long-sleeved tops. She quit on the spot.

Riam, who was born without a forearm, has utilized a prosthetic appendage for as long as she can remember. However, she never let her physical handicap become just that - a handicap. Dean is currently a student at Queen Mary University, located in London, and is pursuing a barrister’s degree.
A&F has never been a stranger to discrimination suits; one was recently settled in the US for discrimination during the hiring process in that they would allegedly only hire “young and beautiful” men and women to work in their stores.
I am not one of those sue-crazy citizens. I think that a lot of the lawsuits nowadays are setups. A lot of people abuse the legal system and look for loopholes to sue over practically everything. I have a family member quite like that and it drives me up the frigging wall. Yet, I hope Riam gets every penny. I hope she triple-sues. I hope after the suit goes through, she receives her requested money and additional funds for pain and suffering. The embarrassment at her treatment by A&F must be immense.

Dozens of Abercrombie & Fitch
By the mid-1990s, there were dozens of abercrombie and fitch stores in the United States. On September 26, 1996, The Limited, Inc. took abercrombie & Fitch public on the New York Stock Exchange with the ticker symbol “ANF” and with the per share offering as $16. In late 1990s, the company began to opt building stores only averaging between 8,000 to 20,000 square feet (700 to 2,000 m2) in high-volume retail centers around the country. It also launched the canoe store prototype of white facade and interior gray walls to accommodate the growth of its brand.
In 1997, Abercrombie & Fitch launched A&F Quarterly. The publication included photography, interview sand articles about sex, pop culture, and other teen interests. In 1998, the company introduced its first subsidiary, abercrombie and fitch. The concept was designed as the abercrombie & Fitch for a younger clientele between the ages on 7-14. In 1999 began a 3-year-long class action lawsuit in which Abercrombie & Fitch was one of several American retailers involved for its sweatshops in Saipan. Revenue recorded for abercrombiea and fitch at the end of fiscal 1998 was at $805.2 million USD. By 1998, Abercrombie & Fitch went became an independent company, and Mike Jeffries assumed the position of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.[16] As the brand regained its prominence, industry analysts began to speculate how long Abercrombie and Fitch would be able to retain its popularity.

Abercrombie and Fitch Clothing
abercrombie and fitch Clothing was started in 1892 by David T. Abercrombie as an outfitter for those who were heading into the wilderness. The brand began to falter in the mid 19th century, but began a turnaround when they were bought by The Limited in 1988. This started a new (successful) life as a clothing line for those looking for “casual luxury” or a “college look.” (Definitely not the look you’d get with H&M Clothing, but to each their own.) There are a lot of people out there who make this their brand, buying very little from other clothing companies.
It’s this kind of loyalty from customers that has allowed the brand to expand so rapidly after changing its image in the late 80s. This company knows what the customers want and they deliver. Some might balk at the prices, but quality costs money and the dollars spent on Abercrombie and Fitch Clothing go a long way when you think about how long the durable clothes are going to last and how much use you’re going to get out of them.
Reasons to Buy abercrombie and fitch
Clothing
Clothing
While there are a lot of reasons to consider this brand, here are some of the top ones you should think about before you spend your hard earned money on clothes from other companies.
* History – This brand has a rich history and past that has been passed onto the clothes of the current A&F generation. This history adds a little something extra to the clothes in this brand. Being around over 100 years in the fashion industry, they must be doing something right.
* Quality – Even the “medium destroyed” clothes from A&F are well made and designed (and destroyed) in such a way that you get a lot of use out of them. Quality is something that never goes out of style and it shows in these clothes and accessories. (Some would say they’re better than Sisley Clothing or even Max Mara Clothing, and that’s saying a lot.)
* Style – This brand offers something just a little different – the perfect blend of luxury, casual, and a hint of the outdoors. It’s a winning style combo, one that has made the company successful enough to launch other brands under the umbrella of A&F.
Where Can I Find abercrombie and fitch Clothes?
A better question might be where you can’t find this clothing brand. Both online and in the physical world, there are a lot of different places to pick up clothes or accessories that carry this name and the heritage that comes along with it. All you have to do is take a look around and you’re bound to run into the brand sooner rather than later during your shopping day.
Wherever you decide to buy abercrombie and fitch clothes, you can rest assured that you’re going to be getting quality and style – even if you go with their “partially destroyed” jeans. Being around as long as they have (even under different ownership), the company knows how to survive. Simply put, they design great styles that people want. A lot has to do with the name of this brand, but it’s also about the clothes.

Finally, Teens Don't Like, Or Want To Be, Girls Who Wear Abercrombie & Fitch
Oh, Abercrombie & Fitch! Your sexed-up, overpriced, sexist, ridiculous clothing epitomized everything that sucked about the late 90's. And now, after a long reign of terror, the kids are finally over your brand of bullshit.
Let me explain why I hate Abercrombie & Fitch so much: when I was in the hospital for anorexia 5 years ago, I shared a room with a young woman who was so sick that she needed to be tube-fed 24 hours a day. She was at least 40 pounds underweight and looked like she was going to break. The week before she was hospitalized, she told me, she went to buy clothes at Abercrombie & Fitch, and the manager pestered her the entire time, begging her to apply for a job there, because she had "the look they wanted." Classy!
abercrombie and fitch rose to prominence during my high school years, when bland preppy clothing somehow became all the rage. Never before or since have kids in public school taken such a shine to khaki pants and puka shell necklaces. Walking into an abercrombie and fitch (or a Hollister, or an American Eagle) is a bit like walking into a super lame high school party; the stench of cheap cologne is everywhere, the lights are low, the music is bad and way too loud, and there is an air of pseudo-sexuality that screams, "I want to make out with you but I'm going to be reallllly bad at it!"
Abercrombie has made headlines over the years by releasing such charming women's t-shirts with sexist slogans such as "With these, who needs brains?" and "Blondes are adored, brunettes are ignored," (the shirts were pulled after boycotts sprung up) and by promoting racist t-shirts with lines like "Two Wongs Can Make It White." Somehow, the company kept going after these disasters, as the kids kept dropping their money on overpriced terry cloth pants.
But the recession is changing everything, and the kids are moving away from the Abercrombie brand. The store is struggling, posting a 34% drop in sales since last year, a number Caitlin McDevitt of MSNBC notes is "the worst among retailers in March."
"There was a time when abercrombie and fitch sexy ad campaigns and half-dressed salespeople were irresistible to teens," McDevitt writes, "A time when an endless line outside the flagship Fifth Avenue store curled around the block each morning. A time when the store effortlessly convinced young people that wearing two expensive polo shirts was infinitely more stylish than wearing just one. And the teens followed like lambs. There were days when A&F stock topped $80 per share, but those days have passed. Now, shares have sunk to less than one-third of that, and it seems that the embroidered Moose logo may be losing its cachet."
Don't worry, abercrombie and fitch
. I'm sure you still have stock of your racist, sexist t-shirts to cry into. And, of course, Rich Cronin will always think you are fly.

Earnings Preview: Abercrombie & Fitch
Teen apparel retailer Abercrombie & Fitch Co. reports earnings for the fiscal second-quarter quarter on Friday. The following is a summary of key developments and analyst opinion related to the period.
OVERVIEW: Abercrombie & Fitch Co. has seen sinking sales amid the recession, as it kept its price points among the highest in the teen sector and waited for a rebound. Over the past few months it has planned more sales and offered lower entry-level prices, but sales are still expected to sink during the quarter ended Aug. 2. Meanwhile, competitors such as Aeropostale Inc. and American Eagle Outfitters Inc., with their emphasis on low prices and basics, have fared better.
Sales in stores open at least on year, or so-called same-store sales, fell 28 percent in July, 32 percent in June and 28 percent in May.
The company said it was shuttering its high-priced Ruehl line of handbags and apparel in a move expected to be complete in January 2010. New Albany, Ohio-based abercrombie and fitch
also operates surf-themed Hollister, abercrombie and fitch
, its store for children, and Gilly Hicks, an intimate apparel line.

BY THE NUMBERS: Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, on average, predict a loss of 7 cents per share on revenue of $647.9 million. The company said, according to a preliminary tally, sales fell 23 percent to $648.5 during the quarter.
ANALYST TAKE: In a note to investors, RBC Capital Markets analyst Howard Tubin said in a client note Tuesday lowering price points and offering more "current-season" fashion in stores are encouraging acts, but he said it will take more of an effort for results to improve.
"We remain on the sidelines with respect to the shares until we see significant newness offered within the assortments across all concepts," wrote Tubin, who rates the company "Average Risk."
Stifel Nicolaus analyst Richard Jaffe wrote in a note to investors that he expects a loss of 3 cents per share, with weak women's apparel offerings and the recession holding back results.
"On a positive note we believe management has demonstrated better inventory management, which bodes well for the second half and we believe that the markdown cadence will likely be more effective going forward (shallower markdowns taken throughout the quarter instead of deep clearance activity at the end of the quarter)," he wrote.
WHATS AHEAD: Analysts will be looking for any indication about how back-to-school sales are doing, an update on closing Ruehl stores and any indications about how the company abercrombie and fitch is planning for the upcoming holiday season.
STOCK PERFORMANCE: Shares rose 13 percent during the three months ended Aug. 1.

abercrombie and fitch amendment would also limit the number of foreign laborers that could fill jobs created by the buildup. However, Mabus says the provisions could put plans for the relocation of 8,000 Marines to Guam from Okinawa, Japan, in jeopardy.
"It's no secret that we oppose his amendment to do that," said Mabus. "For one thing, we don't think we
can afford to make the move if that happens."
Mabus is scheduled to arrive on Guam tomorrow for meetings with military and GovGuam officials.
